When every joint has to be provable, the axis becomes a measuring instrument.

Task

An assembly cell joins plastic housings with forces up to 4 kN. For every part the force-displacement curve has to be recorded and remain traceable for ten years.

Solution

An LK-145 with a load cell in the force path performs the joining. Because the screw is preloaded free of backlash, the measured displacement is also the actual displacement of the tool.

The displacement in the report is the displacement at the tool

With backlash present, the start of every curve would be wrong. The preloaded double nut keeps play below 0.005 mm.

Force is measured, not calculated

A load cell sits between the carriage and the tool holder. Motor current would be the more convenient value, but it carries the friction of the axis with it.

Acceptance with a calibration certificate

Axis and measuring chain are calibrated together and accepted as one unit. The certificate goes into the machine file.
